Director General for Swedish Air Ambulance

Do you want to contribute to equal healthcare across the country through a leadership role with significant impact? As the Director General for Swedish Air Ambulance, you will work in a vital community service with a clear societal mission.

About Swedish Air Ambulance

The Municipal Association Swedish Air Ambulance (KSA) is responsible for coordinating and executing air ambulance missions on behalf of all 21 regions in Sweden. The operation is part of the national healthcare preparedness and is guided by the vision of care on wings – for equal care with world-class quality. Swedish Air Ambulance operates a 24/7 readiness, year-round, from readiness bases at Umeå Airport, Arlanda Airport, and Landvetter Airport, with an office and flight coordination center in Umeå. Missions are carried out at short notice, primarily within Sweden but also in the Nordic countries and other parts of Europe. The association owns six modern equipped air ambulances that are maintained by its own technical department.

About the Role

As the Director General, you are the leading official of Swedish Air Ambulance and report to the association's board. The role entails overall responsibility for the association's combined operations. You are responsible for coordination, governance, and prioritization of cross-administrative tasks with a focus on ensuring a well-functioning, purposeful, and sustainable operation.

The association has about 90 employees, consisting of pilots, flight coordinators, aircraft technicians, and administrative staff. Additionally, the organization is supplemented by service purchases from the regions within various medical functions. As the Director General, you lead the organization through a management team where seven managers and key personnel report directly to you.

The role provides an opportunity to make a real difference, both for the regions as joint owners and for the individual patient. You operate in the intersection of politics, the regions, and the operational activities in a vital and complex organization. The assignment has a broad scope and involves collaboration with stakeholders at local, regional, and national levels, which places high demands on a professional approach and the ability to build and maintain good relationships, both internally and externally.

A central part of the assignment is to, in close dialogue with the board and the regions, drive the continued development of the association. The work includes strengthening structure, financial stability, and professionalization, as well as creating conditions for a long-term sustainable and positive development. Through clear role and responsibility distribution among members, clients, and officials, you contribute to trust, transparency, and effective joint work.

As the Director General, you are also responsible for developing and adapting the operations based on the external environment and the varying needs of the regions, both in everyday situations and during crises. The assignment includes contributing to the establishment of a robust and coordinated preparedness and following and meeting the development of healthcare, including increased specialization and the demands to offer equivalent care throughout the country.

The role also includes being a clear ambassador for the association. You represent the organization to members, political representatives, government agencies, and the media, as well as building and maintaining relationships with the regions, internal functions, aircraft manufacturers, and private healthcare providers. Through long-term and relationship-building leadership, you strengthen the association's position and conditions to fulfill its common societal mission.

About You

We are looking for someone with relevant academic education and several years of experience in leadership positions within a complex organization, including documented experience in leading other managers. To succeed in this role, experience in a politically governed organization is required. Experience from the healthcare sector is advantageous, as well as a well-established national network within healthcare and other relevant areas for the association.

You have a good understanding of the Swedish healthcare system and a well-developed strategic management capability. Furthermore, you possess good knowledge and practical experience in leading change and development work with documented good results. The role also requires the ability to switch between strategic and operational work based on the needs of the organization. You communicate fluently and professionally in both Swedish and English, in both speech and writing.

As a leader, you are attentive and curious about the world around you, with the ability to see opportunities while also analyzing risks and assessing consequences. You are confident in your leadership, show courage, and have the ability to lead even in complex and challenging situations. You are a relationship-building leader who fosters trust and contributes to a strong sense of community throughout the organization. With your commitment and drive, you contribute to the long-term sustainable development of Swedish Air Ambulance.

Our Offer

We offer you a developing assignment in an organization with significant social responsibility, where your leadership and expertise can influence both the direction of the operations and the care that reaches patients across the country. Swedish Air Ambulance is a relatively small organization but has a large mission, which gives you the opportunity to work in a stimulating environment with proximity to decision-making paths, cross-functional collaboration, and broad contact with stakeholders at various levels. The position is a permanent employment with placement in Umeå.

We strive for a balanced gender distribution and see diversity as a strength, and therefore welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. The position is security classified, and a security clearance with a positive result is required before employment.
